Icarus Park - Irish Draught Horses and Irish Sport Horses

Farm

We breed Irish Draught horses and beef cattle at Icarus Park.

History

The property came to be named ‘Icarus’ in the 1970’s after the racehorse ‘Gay Icarus’ who won the 1971 Caulfield Cup and was also Australian Horse of the Year 1970-71.  Click here for article on Gay Icarus (PDF).  Mick Mallyon owned and jockeyed Gay Icarus, and was a prior owner of Icarus Park.  Mallyon won the Caulfield cup three times.

The original name plate of ‘Tregunna’ still adorns the front door of the homestead, with date circa 1865.

Irish Draught Horses

We breed purebred and partbred Irish Draughts.  Both are termed Irish Sport Horses or Irish Draughts.

We breed our mares to Irish Draught stallions every year.  We use natural cover, artificial insemination and also use frozen semen from stallions standing in Ireland and Australia.

Irish sport horses excel in show jumping, eventing and dressage.  They are generally sensible, smart and surefooted mounts, with tremendous jumping ability and athleticism.  Many of the horses competing at the Olympics and World championships in the show jumping and eventing disciplines, have Irish Sport Horse blood.

Cattle

We run a commercial herd of Poll Hereford and Angus cattle.  We sell directly to the consumer, ‘Paddock to Plate.’
